Goodbye, Mango Sergeant unveils Keith Walker’s life from his days in the hot and dusty ghettos of Kingston and the toughness he needed to survive, through his adventures in the lush parish of Portland, to his eventual settlement in a cold, bleak and unfriendly London. It was the sixties, a time of love and flower power but instead Keith found each day was a struggle just to survive in the streets of London. It was a place of dread, and unprovoked violence was commonplace as both ordinary people and institutions made it clear that black people were unwelcome within their communities.

About the Author

Keith Walker, born in Kingston Jamaica, started life in the ghettos of Trench Town and moved to the countryside of Portland. There his love for mangoes, plentiful in the parish, resulted in him being nick-named, “Mango Sergeant”. In the middle sixties, Keith said goodbye to the land of his birth to join his mother in their now adopted home in cold, bleak London. There life for Keith took on a whole new set of challenges from the day he landed at Heathrow.
